Introduction from the Author

As a very frustrated English and Philosophy double major, I often wonder why I have stuck with W&J for these past three years. I ve had my share of problems with the school, and I have come pretty close to submitting transfer applications to go elsewhere, but for some reason I stuck with my decision to become a W&J graduate. With only one year left before I graduate (or so I m hoping), I ve been piecing together the memories I have and figuring out what it was that kept me going through those weeks of late nights in the computer labs, longer weekends wrestling with philosophy texts, and literature finals that made me doubt my very ability to comprehend the English language. I ve had my share of moments shaking my fists angrily at the sky out of sheer frustration, as well as my share of incredible times with friends and professors that I will recall fondly through the remaining course of my life. At this point in my academic career, the best I can figure is that I ve survived only because of a subtle love of the challenges. I like to think that I ve risen well enough to meet most of them.

I can say with absolute certainty that I never intended on becoming the resident student expert on W&J, and I wonder how it came to this. I must first and foremost extend my most sincere thanks to Dr. Kathleen McEvoy, my English advisor and head of our professional writing program. She has helped give me the skills and confidence necessary to tackle a project like this College Prowler guidebook. Secondly, I must extend my deepest thanks to caffeine. Without you, none of this would have been possible. And to my bed: I m sorry I haven t seen as much of you recently as I would like. .

If you ll kindly permit me to offer one final piece of advice, I d like to borrow a line from Milton s epic, Paradise Lost: The mind is its own place, and in it self can make a Heav n of Hell, a Hell of Heav n. Though the theological implications are drastically different, I think the line offers this insight to life here at W&J: it is however you really want to view it. You should only expect your time here to be rewarding and enjoyable if you are willing to work toward making it rewarding and enjoyable. I hope this guidebook has helped to give you a good inside perspective of this school, and I wish you the best in your college years to come, wherever it is you end up. .
