Editorial Review
Product Description: Introduction from the Author When I decided to enroll at Denison University, I quickly discovered that most people had never heard of it. When I told people I was going to Denison, I was consistently met with blank looks or perfunctory nodding. I began to question the decision I made, until I told my friend’s dad. When I said “I’m going to Denison,” his eyes lit up with recognition. He called Denison the “Yale of the Midwest.” Once I got there, I realized that he was right. Denison University is growing and improving every year. In 2003–2004 alone, two new buildings were added to campus: Burton Morgan and the Samson Talbot Hall of Biological Science. Denison University has begun its ascent into the upper echelons of the nation’s colleges and shows no signs of slowing down. It’s difficult to paint an accurate portrait of Denison University with just facts and statistics. After all, it is the atmosphere of any place that defines that place. And Denison has an atmosphere all its own. Being on top of the hill gives the students a chance to immerse themselves in the cultural dynamic of university life, while still allowing access to the town below. Of course, physical location is not the only aspect of a place that creates atmosphere. Your peers and professors at the University also factor in. Student-to-teacher ratios illustrate very little about the way any university classroom operates. Similarly, stratifications of student body diversity, diagrams of room size, and campus maps do little to show the culture in which you will be living. If you’re interested in Denison, you’ve probably done your research and know all about what it can offer you in terms of academics. But do you really want to spend the next four years of your life there? No matter how much statistical information you have about a college and no matter how many promotional pamphlets you’ve been sent, that’s not an easy question to answer. Hopefully, though, this book will provide you with enough insight to flesh out the skeleton of Denison statistics into a fuller image of what day-to-day life is like on campus.
