Product Description: Introduction from the Author

“So you’re going to Woo-stur is it,” people ask me constantly, drawling out the “oo” and grinning widely at the funny sound. “No, no,” I insist, “It’s Wu-ster.” And yes, we are in the middle of Amish country. And yes, we are a very small liberal arts school that many people don’t know about. And yes, we are continuing to produce well-rounded, independently-thinking people who go on to achieve wonderful things. After all, this was the college that stated from the very beginning that men and women should always receive the same education, and that race should have no bearing, graduating the first black student in the 1880s. Dr. Arthur Holly Compton (’13) received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927, and Victor J. Andrew (’26) went on to create coaxial cable and the Andrew Corporation, which is used in every home in America today to broadcast television and satellite systems.

As of late, the College of Wooster has become more well-known to the rest of the world, and if you talk to someone who has heard of Wooster, their eyes widen and they nod vigorously, saying that they’ve heard stunning things about its reputation. And it’s true. Again and again in the past few years the college has had praises rain down about its great curriculum, wonderful teachers, unique student body, excellent graduates, and so on and so forth.

But so what? Statistics may be nice and all, but what do the students think? And what does Wooster have to offer you? That, my friend, is why this book has been written. In the pages that follow, you will see both sides of every aspect of our college. You will come to understand why our graduates get misty looks on their faces at the shrill sound of the bagpipes. More importantly, you will understand the common bond among Wooster alumni and their relationships with each other, whether they graduated yesterday or 50 years ago. We may have great academics, dynamic professors, and national recognition, but above all, people who attend Wooster say it isn’t just these things that matter, but the friends you meet along the way.
